The Checkup Brothers Won't Talk About: Why Prostate Health Deserves a Seat at the Table

The Checkup Brothers Won't Talk About: Why Prostate Health Deserves a Seat at the Table

A closer look at prostate health in our communities — and the everyday habits worth knowing about.

Real talk: the men in our lives will debate sports stats for an hour but go quiet the second the topic turns to a doctor's visit “down there.” That silence is costing us. Prostate health rarely comes up at the barbershop or the family cookout, but it's one of the most urgent health issues facing Black men today -- and it's time we start talking about it like we talk about everything else that matters to our community.

The Numbers

- Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Black men in the U.S., with an estimated 57,300 cases expected in 2025 — accounting for 44% of all cancer diagnoses in Black men.

- Black men have the highest prostate cancer death rate of any racial or ethnic group in the United States and are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as White men.

- There's real progress to point to: prostate cancer deaths among Black men have dropped 56% since their peak in 1993, largely thanks to earlier detection through PSA testing and improvements in treatment.

Why This Hits Our Communities Harder

Part of this disparity comes down to biology and family history, but research also points to something we can actually change: access. Evidence shows Black men have equivalent or even better prostate cancer survival rates when treated in equal-access healthcare systems — meaning a big piece of this gap isn't about who gets prostate cancer, it's about who gets screened early and treated well. Add in a cultural discomfort with talking about men's health, and too many men wait until symptoms are hard to ignore before they ever see a doctor.

Natural Habits Worth Knowing About

This section is general wellness education, not medical advice, and it does not replace a doctor's care or a prescribed treatment plan. Prostate conditions — from urinary discomfort to prostate cancer — should always be diagnosed and managed by a licensed healthcare provider.

- Zinc- and pumpkin seed-rich foods. Pumpkin seeds are naturally rich in zinc and plant sterols that have been studied for their relationship to normal prostate and urinary tract function. They're an easy addition to a meal or snack.

- Lycopene-rich foods. Tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that's been studied in relation to prostate wellness. It's a simple, tasty way to add more color to your plate.

- Saw palmetto. One of the most studied herbal ingredients for men's urinary comfort, with a long history of traditional use — though clinical trial results have been mixed. It's worth a conversation with your doctor if you're curious.

- Herbal prostate wellness blends. Formulas like our own MUD combine traditional herbs to support prostate wellness and everyday urinary comfort as part of a broader self-care routine — always worth discussing with your doctor, especially alongside any current treatment.

- Daily movement. Regular physical activity supports normal circulation and overall wellness, including in ways that matter for urinary and prostate comfort.

- Mindful hydration. Staying hydrated during the day while easing up on fluids a couple hours before bed is a simple habit that supports more restful, uninterrupted nights.
